Quinceanera

What is the meaning of the quince años celebration?

EVERY CULTURE has rituals to celebrate the passage from one stage of life to another, especially the passage from childhood to adulthood. Among Hispanic Catholics, the quince años has become the way many young women celebrate the passage from childhood to adulthood. by participating in the quince años rite, the young woman show the popular religion has a place in her spirituality and that her relationship with God is important. The rite also offers the opportunity for the young woman to thank God, her family and the Christian community for the gift of her faith, as well as to receive their blessing. The quinceañera celebration tells us God lifts and blesses the poor and the lowly. Who better to symbolize this than a young woman, a quinceañera, trying to navigate what it means to be a Hispanic woman and survive the forces that can threaten to dominate her?

Act of Thanksgiving

Heavenly Father,

I thank you for the gift of life, for creating me in your image and likeness, and for calling me to be your daughter through Baptism.

Thank you for sending your Son Jesus to save me and your Holy Spirit to sanctify me.

To that which in your goodness and love you will for me, I say “yes,” with your grace I commit myself to serve my brothers and sisters all my life.

Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, I dedicate myself to you. Since you are my model of faith, help me to continue learning from you what I need to be a Christian woman. Help me to hear the Word of God as you did, holding it in my heart and loving others, so that, as I walk with Jesus in this life, I may worship him with you in all eternity. Amen

The priest responds:

N. (N. and N.), may God, who has begun this good work in you, bring it to completion.

BLESSING

(The blessing may be pronounced by the priest, while inviting the gathered assembly to extend their hands over the quinceañera in a sign of blessing, or recited by the priest together with the gathered assembly).

Loving God, you created all the people of the world and you know each of us by name. We thank you for N. (these quinceañeras), who today celebrate(s) her (their) fifteenth birthday.

Bless her (them) with your love and friendship that she (they) may grow in wisdom, knowledge, and grace.

May she (they) love her (their) family always and be faithful to her (their) friends. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen
