This weekend at our 5:00 Saturday Mass, we celebrate San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint.   All are invited to join in our potluck reception following the Mass.   St. Lorenzo Ruiz was born around 1600 in Manila. He was a laymen educated by the Dominicans, a husband and father of 3 children. After being accused of murder, he traveled with a group of Dominican priests to Japan, where Christians were facing persecution. The group was tortured in an effort to make them renounce their faith, but they refused and were martyred. According to accounts, St. Lorenzo Ruiz’s last words were, “I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please.” He was canonized on October 18, 1987.   St. Lorenzo Ruiz, pray for us!
